Kalamazoo Bee Club Apiary
Location:
1327 108th Ave. Otsego, MI  49078

The Kalamazoo Bee Club started an apiary in the spring of 2010 to educate young beekeepers ages 5 - 15 and assist beginning beekeepers of all ages with hands-on experiences in the hives. The club apiary is owned by the Kalamazoo Bee Club and is available for all members to use, adults as well as young people.

Young-Beekeepers-First-HiveThe club apiary was located at Forget Me Not Landscape & Nursery on East Main Street for the first year and a half, and then in July of 2011 the apiary was moved to 1327 108th Ave. Otsego, MI  49078. The reason for the move was to improve forage opportunities in mid and late summer.

The Kalamazoo Bee Club apiary is used to teach beekeeping skills and to try out different beekeeping techniques. We encourage beekeepers to use trial and error to determine the most practical and successful ways to keep bees in our area. We encourage innovation and experimentation.

The Kalamazoo Bee Club encourages intergenerational beekeeping within families to secure the future of beekeeping. We emphasize cooperative beekeeping, working together in pairs or small groups.  We promote keeping bees in a sustainable way that keeps the bees healthy and productive in the long term. We encourage entrepreneurship among our young people, so they can see beekeeping as a means of income as well as a hobby.

young-Beekeepers-Second-HivAttendance at Field Days has generally ranged from 10 – 40 people. The Kalamazoo Bee Club is indebted to Caroline and Anneliese for all their hard work in putting this program together and for all the hours they spent teaching the young people and their families about the rewards of keeping bees.

Coordianators for the 2011 Young Beekeepers Program are Bee Club members John Maile and Janet DeZwaan.
