Bee Health Update
October 19,2009
worker bee
http://www.extension.org/bee%20health

1. Bee Health Fact Sheet Developed

http://pubwiki.extension.org/mediawiki/files/7/75/BeeFS.pdf

Download the above high quality fact sheet about our community.
Distribute this to beekeepers and others to generate traffic to
our website, and increase our Google search rank. This fact sheet
was developed at the University of Tennessee and staff at
eXtension.org

2. European Foulbrood: A New Feature Page

http://www.extension.org/pages/
European_Foulbrood:_A_Bacterial_Disease_Affecting_Honey_Bee_Brood

A new honey bee disease and pest page on European Foulbrood has been
developed by the University of Tennessee. This is the most comprehensive,
original content developed for the eXtension.org, Bee Health project to date.
It involves significant detail, with references and high quality, original images.
It was designed to be a model for the rest of the honey bee disease and pest pages.

3. Reviewers Needed

The above page is already published, but we would like to establish a peer review
system for this and future pages. We ask for three volunteers to review the
EFB page and give brief or detailed feedback. To participate as a reviewer simply
respond to Michael Wilson at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it that you would like to participate.
Michael will write back with instructions when three names are obtained. If more then
three people respond, Michael will retain your names for future reviews.

4. 2009 National eXtension.org Conference in St. Lewis

http://about.extension.org/2009-extension-national-conference/

Michael Wilson and Paul Rhoads of the University of Tennessee will
represent the Bee Health CoP at the national eXtension.org conference
in St. Lewis. This will give Bee Health exposure to many other communities
and extension and research professionals through a poster display,
Content Managed Board participation, and workshops. Pages from
the Bee Health group will be featured with others, in a workshop titled,
"Building Connections Between Research Communities and eXtension".
This workshop is developed by an eXtension.org Content Management Board task
force charged with better connecting researchers to eXtesnsion.org. This task force is
lead by Rick Koelsch, Assistant Dean of Extension, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Michael Wilson of Bee Health is participating in this task force and the
Content Managed Board of eXtension.org.

5. AAPA Position Statement on the Health of the US Honey Bee Industry

http://www.extension.org/pages/American_Association_of_Professional_Apicluturists:_
Position_Statement_on_the_Health_of_the_US_Honey_Bee_Industry

The American Association of Professional Apicluturists is now linked from the
Bee Health homepage in the new menu redesign. Included, is a position paper
on honey bee health and CCD the organization finalized in January 2009. This
link represents the first step in and increased cooperation between Bee Health and the
AAPA. Future work with the AAPA is focusing on video taping the 2010 ABRC research
conference in Orlando FL for inclusion on the Bee Health website and a proposed
YouTube channel for the Bee Health eXtension.org project.

6. Native Bees

Bee Health now contains two basic information articles pertaining to native bees.
The first is Jim Cane's Logan BeeMail Shelter,

http://www.extension.org/pages/The_Logan_BeeMail_Shelter

And the second is Emily McGlynn, Neal Williams, and Rachel Winfree's .pdf
Native Bee Benefits: How to increase native bee pollination on your farm in several steps
They have obtained permissions to convert the .pdf into web-pages, which will occur in coming weeks.
This will make the content more discoverable and integrated into the rest of the
Bee Health site. Until, then visitors can access this richly illustrated publication
from the Bee Health homepage.
